Court body tells Berlusconi to respect fraud ruling (see related) (ANSA) - Rome, June 20 - The head of the judiciary's self-governing body on Thursday called for ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi to respect the Constitutional Court's decision to reject his petition to strike down a tax-fraud conviction.

He should "recognize and respect the role of the judge and the law," said Michele Vietti, the head of the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM). On Wednesday the Constitutional Court rejected the media mogul's bid to repeal a four-year jail term and a five-year ban from public office for tax fraud on film rights at his Mediaset empire. Following the ruling, the three-time premier said he was the victim of a "20-year attempt to eliminate me from political life". Berlusconi is appealing to the supreme Court of Cassation.
