Extremists mark birthday of Adolf Hitler in Varese

Vendola calls for explanation

22 April, 19:13
Extremists mark birthday of Adolf Hitler in Varese (ANSA) - Rome, April 22 - It is "absolutely inconceivable" that a celebration of Adolf Hitler was permitted in an Italian city, Puglia Governor Nichi Vendola said Monday.

The country's interior minister should explain how this was allowed, said Vendola, leader of the Left Ecology Freedom (SEL) party.

"(It is) absolutely inconceivable that Nazis from all over Europe have been permitted to celebrate the birthday of Hitler in Varese," he said.

About 400 people were said to have attended an ultra-right rally in the northern city of Varese, which was ostensibly organized last Saturday to celebrate a local event - but which happened to be held on Hitler's birthday.
