Napolitano says panel of 'wise men' has 'time limits'

(ANSA) - Rome, April 2 - Meetings by the presidential committee of 10 "wise men" appointed by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano beginning on Tuesday are "absolutely informal, purely reconnaissance, and have obvious time limits," a presidential spokesperson said.

Napolitano has come under criticism over his appointment of the committee comprised of two working groups as a way out of Italy's political deadlock.

At 11 am meetings begin with the six figures responsible for economic and European issues - the head of statistics agency ISTAT Enrico Giovannini, Competition Authority head Giovanni Pitruzzella, Bank of Italy board member Salvatore Rossi, Giancarlo Giorgetti from the Northern League (Lega), Filippo Bubbico from the Democratic Party (PD) and European Affairs Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi.

At 12, meetings start with the four institutional figures - Constitutional Court President Valerio Onida,  former PD House speaker Luciano Violante, Mario Mauro from outgoing Premier Mario Monti's Civic Choice (Scelta Civica) and Gaetano Quagliariello of Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party.

The two working meetings are aimed at "formulating precise policy proposals that can become a target shared by political forces," the president's office said.
