Crisis, recession 'result of decades of public mismanagement'

Fiat CEO hopes Monti will lead Italy 'forever' (ANSA) - London, October 12 - Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said on Friday he hoped Italian Premier Mario Monti would remain at the helm of the eurozone's third largest economy "forever".

"He was hired to fix this mess and it will not be easy or shortlived," Marchionne said. "The public debt did not amass between 2011 and 2012," he added.

Monti, who was appointed to replace ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi amid a peak in the euro crisis last November, is scheduled to step down from the helm of a technocratic government after general elections next spring. Marchionne called Italy's recessionary economy the result of "decades of mismanagement of public affairs", warning of a "painful awakening" for Italians who do not realize there is work left to do.
