A gunsmith checks the barrel of gun
in a gun manufacturing factory in Srinagar, the summer capital
of Indian Kashmir, 27 February 2024. Burhan Farooq Zaroo, owner
of the Zaroo Gun Factory located in Sikandar Pora Rainawari,
says they have been in this business since 1984, but the
business suffered a setback since the government banned it for
decades. However, a few months ago, the government lifted the
ban, and a licensee will be generated online, but till now no
one has come here. 'We are in the hope that the Narendra Modi
government will think something good for us too', he said. Zaroo
added that 'earlier our grandfather was used to do this work,
and after that, my father and uncle were involved in the same
business, but I don't think it will last for long if the
situation remains the same'. Zaroo fears that he cannot motivate
future generations to get involved in this business as licenses
are not being issued in Kashmir. 'I ask the government to look
into our matter and appeal to them to issue at least limited
quote licenses so that we can run our families from this
business", he said.
