Tourism: Croatia, one million arrivals in August

The sector expects a decline, but smaller than expected

11 August, 12:15
(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 11 AGO - ZAGREB, AUGUST 11 - Nearly one million tourists, many more than expected, stayed in the first week of August on the Croatian Adriatic coastline. According to some estimates, the sector, despite the coronavirus, could achieve this year a turnover close to 70% of that of 2019, the Croatian Tourist Board (HTZ) reported.

Most foreign tourists have chosen Istria and the north Adriatic, which are easy to reach by car from Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, and northern Italy. Germans, usually ranking first in terms of arrivals, were 225,000, which is 6% more than in the same period last year, followed by Slovenes (up 10%) and Poles (up 18%).

In July, Croatian tourism recorded a sharp decline, 40% compared to July 2019, but much less than some catastrophic estimates that spoke of a drop of up to 90%. Even the data for August, according to many operators in the sector, seem encouraging for now. Long queues formed between Friday and Sunday at border crossings and motorway toll booths and tolls paid have declined by just 7.5%. The tourism sector, however, which sees a dramatic decline, is that of large cruises. In fact, since March, not even a foreign cruise ship has landed in the tourist ports on the Croatian coast, and this sector records a 90% decline in arrivals. (ANSA).
