Slovenia: wildfires under control after difficult night

However, there are worries about winds picking up in afternoon

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 22 - The wildfires in Slovenia's Kras, just across the Italian border, are now relatively under control, but there are concerns that the wind might pick up again in the afternoon, the Slovenian public television reports this morning.

All through the night, 500 firefighters from six different fire regions were stationed at the fire site. A fire started last night close to Cerje in addition to the fire line heading towards Trstelje. According to the television, the situation is currently under control.

The Slovenian news agency STA confirmed this morning that despite a challenging night for the Karst firefighters, they were able to contain the fire. Additionally, today's NASA FIRMS satellite fire-detection data show that the Kras wildfires' extent has significantly decreased from yesterday.

"Thousand firefighters" were "battling fire and wind": After five days of fighting fires in the Kras region, both professional and volunteer firefighters from all over the nation are exhausted. The images left behind by the blaze are apocalyptic, the Slovenian daily Delo wrote in today's edition.
