Slovenia: fire contained to two locations, fear for winds

Evacuees returning home, firefighters still working

21 July, 10:11
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 21 - After a difficult night, the massive fire that raged in the Kras region of Slovenia, on the border between Slovenia and Italy, south of Nova Gorica, has been reduced to two isolated fires, according to the Slovenian news agency STA. Slovenian firefighters, on the other hand, continue to fight the wildfires, including from the air.

Meanwhile, the majority of the residents of the four villages that were evacuated on Wednesday have returned home, according to STA.

Evin Curlic of Slovenian Civil Protection said that if the wind picked up again, the fire could start spreading again, but it's difficult to forecast the wind situation because it changes so quickly, STA said.

More than 800 firefighters were on the ground during the night, and new units are coming today. (ANSA).
