Covid: Slovenia, strongest population decline since 1945

In 2020, deaths exceeded the number of births by almost 5.250

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 26 - Slovenia registered last year the highest negative natural change in terms of population since 1945, the Slovenian news agency STA reported today, quoting data from the Slovenian Statistics Office.

During the pandemic, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by almost 5,250, the news agency informed. According to official data, more than 24,000 Slovenians died in 2020, nearly 3,800 more than the average figure recorded in 2015-2019.

Excess mortality was the highest in the last quarter of 2020.

"The Covid-19 epidemic has left an indelible mark on Slovenia's demographics," the STA wrote. (ANSA).
