Serbia: number of deaths up 3.1% in first 10 months of 2020

Strong increase in summer months

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 25 NOV - Serbia registered 86,798 deaths between January and October 2020, 2,630 more (+3.1%) compared to the same period of 2019, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS) said in a statement today. Between January and October 2019, the Balkan country reported 84,168 deaths.

According to RZS preliminary data, the number of deaths in Serbia was lower year-on-year in February (9122 in 2020 vs 9793 in 2019) and March (8189 in 2020 vs 8933 in 2019), slightly higher in April (8626 in 2020 vs 8256 in 2019) and again lower year-on-year in May (8602 in 2020 vs 8950 in 2019). However, a significant increase in the number of deaths was registered starting from June. In June, 8325 people were registered death in the country (+8.0% year-on-year), 10023 in July (+20.4% y-o-y), 8730 in August (+14.6% y-o-y) and 8123 in September (+8.7% y-o-y), while in October the number of deaths was in line with 2019 (8353 vs 8441).

After largely containing the first wave of cases in spring, Serbia registered a significant spike in coronavirus cases at the end of June 2020 until mid-August. According to official statistics, Serbia registered 133,029 cumulative cases of coronavirus, 1,274 deaths as of November 24. In the past days the country reported more than 6,000 new cases of infection every 24 hours. (ANSA).
