(ANSA) - ROME, 22 MAR - An earthquake magnitude 5.3 occurred at 5:24 a.m. local time in Zagreb, Croatian capital.

Italian geophisic and vulcanology national Institute (Ingv) and US geological service Usgs said hypocenter earthquake was 10 km deep and epicenter in Kasina, at North East of Croatian capital.

No news about damages to people or things. (ANSA).

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook the Croatian capital of Zagreb Sunday, damaging buildings and cutting electricity in a number of neighbourhoods. The quake struck around 06:00 am (0500 GMT), causing many residents to rush into the streets, an AFP correspondent said. The 5.3-magnitude temblor's epicentre was seven kilometres north of Zagreb, according to the CSEM Euro-Mediterranean seismological centre. In old neighbourhoods of central Zagreb, building facades crumbled and many parts of the city were left without power. A 5.0 magnitude aftershock occurred an hour later, the CSEM said. No casualties have been reported for the time being. The Balkans lie on major faultlines and are regularly hit by earthquakes. ljv/lc/fox

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 22 MAR - The Krsko nuclear power plant, located in Slovenia, approximately 60 km from Zagreb, Croatian capital hit by a strong quake in the morning, is operating safely and reliably, the management of the NPP said in a statement published on the official website of the 'Nuklearna Elektrana Krsko' (NEK), co-owned by Slovenia and Croatia. "Preventive inspections of systems and equipment are ongoing" and "the power plant is operating at full power," NEK informed. (ANSA).
