Albania: Council of Europe criticize President's impeachment

Venice Commission calls re-examination draft law on property

11 October, 16:16
(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 11 OCT - Against the background of the impeachment procedure against the Albanian President Ilir Meta - accused of having postponed local elections beyond the electoral mandate of local authorities -, the Council of Europe constitutional experts of the Venice Commission have concluded "that while the President may have acted beyond his constitutional powers, there are indications that his acts may not have been of a nature justifying impeachment," the Council of Europe said in a statement today. The opinion of the Venice Commission had been requested by Albanian Assembly Speaker Gramoz Ruci. In a second opinion on Albania, the Venice Commission called also for the re-examination of a draft law on immovable property rights, which "lacks clarity and precision," the Commission noted.
