Ukraine: EU, Russia should release sailors and officers

Ukrainians illegally held in Crimea, rights must be respected

18 July, 12:20
(ANSA) - STRASBOURG, July 18 - "The EU has repeatedly expressed its concern over all the Ukrainian citizens illegally detained in the Crimea", the European commissioner for humanitarian aid, Christos Stylianides, said at the Plenary of the European Parliament. "We continue to demand - he added - the immediate and unconditional release of Ukrainian officers and sailors", but we also demand "respect for the law of the sea and international law".

Stylianides then pointed out that "Russia is responsible for respecting human rights in the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula", underlining that prisoners should be allowed to receive medical treatment and maintain contact with their lawyers. (ANSA).
