Croatia: former premier Milanovic will run for president

Election by the end of the year. Kitarovic will run again

18 June, 10:20
(ANSA) - ZAGREB - Former Croatian Social Democratic prime minister Zoran Milanovic announced he is going to run for president in the upcoming election.

Milanovic, who has been the head of the Croatian government from 2011 until 2015, will be the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) but he will probably get the support of a number of liberal and center-wing parties. The former prime minister resigned as leader of his party in September 2016, after losing the general election for the second time in a year. Then he decided to retire.

Milanovic's choice to run for the highest post in the country is due to the fact that he relies on the widest support among the left-wing candidates who would challenge president Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic.

The presidential elections (through universal suffrage) will take place by the end of the year. Current president Kitarovic, who is supported by the country's conservative forces, has not yet expressed herself on a possible reappointment for a second five-year term, but this occurrence seems quite probable.
