Juncker endorses Romania to join the Schengen zone

President not 'particularly concerned' about rule of law issues

21 February, 18:32
(ANSA) - BRUXELLES - "There is no longer any reason to exclude Romania from Schengen area", its place "is in the Schengen zone", president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, told reporters today in Brussels, after a meeting with the Romanian Prime Minister, Viorica Dancila.

Juncker and Dancila discussed today the rule of law issues faced by the country. "There are some political forces in Romania who might give the impressions that the rule of law is threatened, but I am full confident in their system, I'm not particularly concerned about Romania. We will carefully observe what we can observe", Juncker pointed out.

Starting from January 2019 Bucharest will hold the EU presidency and will "carry a major responsibility" for the final approval of the EU multiannual financial framework, Juncker pointed out.
