Romania: over 20,000 took to the streets against government

Against justice reform:'This nullifies fight against corruption'

11 December, 14:42
(ANSA) - BUCHAREST - Over twenty thousand people took to the streets last night in Bucharest to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the government led by social democrat premier Mihai Tudose. Despite freezing temperatures, the protesters, including former premier Dan Ciolos, have occupied the central square Victoriei for over five hours, to say it loud, that they are against the government, especially with regard to the justice reform, which would nullify the effectiveness of the fight against rampant corruption. The Romanian parliament is ready to pass a series of measures that, according to the protesters, would give the politicians greater control over the judiciary. Similar anti-government demonstrations have been held in the main cities of Romania in the last two months. Bucharest mayor, Gabriela Firea, who is also a member of the PSD, tried last week to lend a helping hand to the government and stop somehow the wave of protests, by organizing the exhibition of Christmas markets exactly in Victoriei square, but the attempt failed. The protesters got rid of the booths which were specifically built for the event.
