15 January, 12:30

(ANSA) - ROME - A weekend of special events starts in Wroclaw, the fourth largest city in Poland, beginning with the opening ceremony of the year that will see the Polish city take the role of European Capital of Culture 2016. More than one hundred events are scheduled for the rest of the year, including exhibitions, concerts and shows. Roads, railway stations, shopping centres and even hospitals will be involved. The opening ceremony, Sunday 17 January at midday, will be held at the National Forum of Music, which will host a concert of symphonic music inspired by the figure and works of one of the most influential composers of the postwar world, Iannis Xenakis.

As a tribute to the city of San Sebastian, the second European Capital of Culture 2016, an exhibition featuring the famous Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida entitled ''Brzmienia'' (Sounds) will open in Wroclaw tomorrow (today). Forty works by Chillida, along with sound installations created by composer Gorka Alda will be exhibited at the Bwa Gallery of Contemporary Art.
