(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 09 DEC - Romanians spend more than one
fifth of their total budget on food, the highest share in the
European Union, according to new Eurostat data published today.
In 2018, households in Romania spent 27.8% of total household
consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages, the
EU statistical agency said. High shares were registered also in
Lithuania (20.9%), Estonia (19.6%), Bulgaria (19.1%), Croatia
(18.8%), Latvia (17.8%), Slovakia (17.4%), Greece (16.9%) and
Poland (16.4%), all countries above the 12.1% EU average. In
contrast, the figure was below 10% in the United Kingdom (7.8%),
Ireland (8.7%), Luxembourg (9.1%) and Austria (9.7%).
Between 2008 and 2018, Eurostat added, the largest increase
of food expenditures was recorded in in Czechia and Slovakia
(both +1.4%), while the largest decrease was recorded in
Lithuania (from 24.8% in 2008 to 20.9% in 2018, -3,9%), followed
by Poland (-3.4%). (ANSA).
