(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 31 OCT - The European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is lending 100 million
euro to Serbia to buy new trains, EBRD said in a statement
today.
The upgrade is part of network and services modernization by
the state railway company Srbija Voz, which will use the funds
to buy up to 18 new trains, to be used in particular regional
passenger services on the electrified sections of the Serbian
rail network.
EBRD recalled that the rail infrastructure in the Balkan
countries has suffered from severe under-investment since the
1990s. As a consequence, today, only five per cent of passengers
using rail.
EBRD has provided over 1 billion euro to Serbia for
investments in sustainable infrastructure until today. (ANSA).
