Slovenia: Letta and Illy at the Bled Strategic Forum

Sustainable development, future of Nato, protectionism, Balkans

(ANSA) - LJUBLJANA, SEPTEMBER 2 - The Bled Strategic Forum (BSF), organized by the Foreign Ministry of Ljubljana, kicks off today in Slovenia. This year's edition will focus on sustainable development, in particular on the 'Sources of (in) stability'.

The keynote speech was given by Jeffrey Sachs, an American economist and essayist, as well as director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, preceded by the speeches given by Slovenian President Borut Pahor, Prime Minister Marjan Sarec and Foreign Minister Miro Cerar. The BSF carried out in cooperation with the Bled School of Management (IEDC), is one of the most important foreign policy events at the regional level and involves numerous representatives of international politics, business, and civil society. The future of Nato, protectionism as a source of global instability, human rights, and the circular economy are among the issues to be discussed. A parallel session focused on entrepreneurship and a Strategic Forum for young people on the theme 'Young people as a (future) resource', which began yesterday, is also taking place in Bled.

As for Italy, Enrico Letta, a former premier, and professor at Sciences PO in Paris, and Andrea Illy, president of Illy spa, will speak at the forum. All foreign ministers of the Western Balkans have confirmed their presence in the panel scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, where they will discuss the challenges of the region along with the Deputy Assistant Secretary at US Department of State - Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Palmer, appointed a few days ago as a special representative US for the Balkans. Among the international guests, this year are the Estonian president, Kersti Kaljulaid, the Spanish foreign minister, Josep Borrell, who will succeed Federica Mogherini as High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlüt Cavusoglu, his Finnish counterpart Pekka Haavisto, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, and the secretary of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces.
