Coronavirus: 350,000 lost their job in Romania

Around 900,000 contracts still suspended due to lockdown

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 14 - Around 350,000 Romanians have lost their job during the coronavirus pandemics, local media reported on Thursday.

The number of employment contracts terminated in the country since the state of emergency came in force on March 16 reached nearly 350,000 on May 13, the portal Romania Insider said today, quoting information from the national Labour Inspectorate. Out of the 350,000 contracts terminated in Romania in March and April, most were active on the services, manufacturing and construction sector.

The portal recalled that another 350,000 people were already searching for a job by the end of February and that snouy 350,000 Romanians came back from abroad and may be looking now for work in their country, bringing the total estimated number of Romanian looking for work amidst the pandemic to over a million.

Around 900,000 contracts were declared suspended as of May 12, but the number is declining as many workers are getting back to the factories, the portal added. (ANSA).
