Fatal road accident number high in Bulgaria, Romania

Around 25,000 fatalities estimated in the EU in 2017

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, AUGUST 20 - Bulgaria and Romania are the EU countries that recorded the highest number of fatal road accidents per million inhabitants involving passenger cars and pedestrians in 2017, according to Eurostat data made public today.

Among EU member states, Bulgaria ranked highest in the passenger car category with 64 deaths per million inhabitants against the 23 deaths per million of the EU average. Romania ranked first for the rate of deaths among pedestrians in road traffic accidents (37 deaths per million inhabitants against the EU average of 11), while Greece has the highest rate of fatalities in relation to motorcycle accidents (20 deaths per million inhabitants, 12 in the EU) in 2017, Eurostat said.

Romania ranked also first for the numbers of cyclists killed in road accidents (10 deaths per million inhabitants, 4 the EU average). The number of fatalities in road traffic accidents in the EU is estimated to be around 25,000 in 2017 (50 fatal accidents per million inhabitants), the EU statistical office said. (ANSA).
