Poland: proposal to exempt under-26 from income tax

To stop emigration and encourage returns from abroad

27 June, 11:51
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 27 JUN - The Polish government is planning to abolish personal income tax for employees under the age of 26, the specialized portal Emerging Europe reported. Poland wants to be "an increasingly friendly and good place to work and live for young people, so that their prospects are better every year," Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki said as quoted by the portal.

Emerging Europe wrote that the draft legislation foresees that Polish citizens under 26 with an annual income lower than 20,000 euros per year would not be taxed at all. The bill should be approved by the Parliament. According to the portal, the law aims at reducing the number of young Poles willing to emigrate, to encourage Polish citizens living abroad to return to home and to increase the workforce participation among young people.

The Finance ministry Marian Banas said that the government estimates that around two million young Poles will be exempted from paying the income tax if the legislation is approved.
