Moldova: a pro-Russian could be the mayor of Chisinau

According to preliminary data, Ceban won 52% of the vote

(ANSA) - MOSCOW, 4 NOV - The pro-Russian Ion Ceban could soon be the new mayor of Chisinau: according to the preliminary results issued by the Central Electoral Commission, the 39-year-old Ceban, a member of the socialist party, beat the pro-European Andrei Nastase (Acum Block) in yesterday's runoff, winning 52.54% of the vote against the 47.46% of the opponent.

The Russian Interfax news agency and the American newspaper Radio Liberty reported. Between the two, there would be a difference of over 10,000 votes. If the data were confirmed, Ceban would be the first Socialist Chisinau mayor in post-Soviet history. The turnout was 37%. In the June 2018 mayoral elections, Nastase had beaten Ceban, but the results had been canceled in a controversial court ruling deemed to be politically motivated. (ANSA).
