EP, same-sex unions should be recognised across the EU

Actions needed against discrimination in Poland and Hungary

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, SEP 14 - The EU should lift obstacles facing LGBTIQ people when exercising their basic rights, said members of the European Parliament after voting a resolution on the rights of LGBTIQ persons in the EU. "Rainbow families and same-sex couples should have the same freedom of movement and family reunification rights as others," the Parliament noted.

The resolution was adopted with 387 votes in favour, 161 against and 123 abstaining. The European Parliament "emphasises that these citizens should be able to fully exercise their rights, including the right to free movement, everywhere in the Union," the Parliament said.

MEPs took also note of the discrimination faced by the LGBTIQ communities in Poland and Hungary and the Parliament called for further EU action (infringement procedures, judicial measures and budgetary tools) against these countries. (ANSA).
