The EU Parliament calls Trocsanyi to explain ties with Orban

He must also cinch respect of rule of law in candidate countries

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, 20 SEP - The Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (AFET) will hear Laszlo Trocsanyi, the Hungarian Commissioner selected for the Neighbourhood and Enlargement portfolio, on October 1st from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

"How will you ensure that your past work as a member of the Hungarian Government will not affect your work as Commissioner responsible for Enlargement?", MEPs ask Trocsanyi in a questionnaire ahead of the hearing. The political profile of Orban's former Minister of Justice will be in the spotlight. Trocsanyi served in the Hungarian Government from 2014 to 2019 and was responsible for some controversial laws - including the blocking of NGO activities and constitutional changes that have limited independence of the judiciary - strongly condemned by Brussels.

Trocsanyi will also have to explain what his priorities are for strengthening the EU neighborhood policy, what method he intends to use for the management of pre-accession funds and if he is likely to introduce the conditionality linked to the respect of the rule of law, human rights and the independence of the judiciary by the candidate countries (the Western Balkans and Turkey).
