Conte sees Merkel, focus on growth and Libya

Summit on Africa in Berlin on November 19

11 November, 13:09
(ANSA) - ROME, NOVEMBER 11 - Relaunching growth and the Libyan crisis, the immigration dossier and the need to strengthen Europe's governance are the issues on the table at today's business dinner between Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Chancellor Angela Merkel at Villa Doria Pamphilj (Rome).

The meeting will also be an opportunity to strengthen a relationship that Conte deemed very important even when he was leading the yellow-green government. Moreover, the bilateral meeting is part of the final stage of the negotiation on Alitalia, which also involves Germany's Lufthansa. A joint press conference will be held ahead of the dinner.

Given the relationship between the two heads of government, a private meeting between Conte and Merkel is likely to be held ahead of a meeting between the two full delegations. The Libyan dossier and that on migrants will be two main issues also because on November 19 next Conte will fly to Berlin to attend the "Compact with Africa" summit, focusing on Libya. On the above-mentioned issues, Italy and Germany are in tune: both opposed to any solution other than the political one, both convinced of the need for a European mechanism to redistribute migrants. Not surprisingly, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio thanked Germany for the solidarity shown in recent months for the relocation of the migrants who landed on the Italian coasts.

But Merkel and Conte will also talk about crisis and growth.
