EU: Babis, the Visegrad countries don't Timmermans in the EC

'We'd prefer someone who understands our region'

(ANSA) - PRAGUE, July 1 - The countries of the Visegrad group do not want Timmermans to join the European Commission, Czech prime minister Andrej Babis said after a meeting with the leaders of Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary.

According to Babis, the new president of the Commission should be a person who does not 'divide' Europe. "We do not claim that the leader should be from central or eastern Europe.

Obviously, there are some candidates from this area, but we'd prefer someone who understands our region, who has neither prejudice nor negative opinions, for example with regard to our stances on the migration crisis, the climate change or the budget", Babis said. "Timmermans, instead, has repeatedly shown a negative attitude towards our region and has clearly different opinions regarding the migration crisis", explained the Czech premier, describing the Dutch candidate as "a person who is not a big supporter of Eastern Europe".
