(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 16 NOV - MOSCOW, NOVEMBER 16 - Over 1,100 participants in unauthorized protests were arrested yesterday in Belarus. The Viasna center for human rights reported, quoted by Interfax. Most of the arrests took place in Minsk. Still, human rights activists said that similar events occurred in Gomel, Svetlogorsk, Novogrudok, Bobruisk, Grodno, Pinsk, Brest, Novopolotsk, Baranovichi, Mogilev, Osipovichi, Zhlobin, Molodechno, and Ivye.

The Police Department of the Minsk City Executive Committee confirmed the arrests in Minsk and special forces. The death of Roman Bondarenko, a former member of the Belarusian special forces beaten and killed by regime agents last week for interfering with a punitive raid, triggered yesterday's protests.
