King Felipe VI of Spain stressed the
need for pro-EU, democratic countries to join forces in a
lecture at the San Carlo theatre in Naples during the Spanish
royals' two-day State visit to Italy.
"It is important to unite the forces of modern, pro-European
countries firmly rooted in democratic values, within which Spain
and Italy occupy a very significant space," Felipe said.
The king also spoke about the importance of higher education.
"A university must be the place where we learn to seek the truth
through reason, dialogue between opposing opinions: a safe space
where we can freely and rationally discuss the issues that
trouble and worry society," he said.
"Reflection in the university environment is indispensable in
complex moments like the one we are going through; it connects
the work of teachers, researchers and students with the social
needs of our time by putting all our knowledge and experiences,
all our knowledge and our skills at the service of society as a
whole". "It ultimately contributes to responding to major
challenges and concerns, starting from a Mediterranean vision,
with a European vocation in a global outlook".
