Europe's armies need to have more
troops in order to deter Russia from an attack, NATO Secretary
General Mark Rutte said on Thursday in an interview with ANSA
and some other outlets.
"In four or five years' time, our deterrence capacity will be
weakened to such an extent that the Russians may start thinking
about attacking us," Rutte said, adding that the allies,
especially in Europe, needed to up a gear in defence spending.
"There is a problem with the number of soldiers currently
available.
"The navy and air forces are fine, but we need more people in
the armies"
He said that how to do this was "a national decision."
He also said that we need "more innovation".
