(ANSAmed) - BELGRADE, 26 GEN - Less than half of the population in Serbia is in favour of the country's adhesion to the European Union, according to a recent survey. The poll conducted by the ministry for European integration found that, if a referendum were held on the question 'Do you back Serbia's EU membership?' only 43% would be in favour compared to 32% against. A reported 13% would not vote while 12% would not know the answer.
The survey, conducted on a sample 1,050 Serbian citizens over 18 found that 65% nevertheless backed the implementation of reforms necessary for the country to join the EU, in order to improve the quality of life of the population and to modernize the country. The reforms considered to be more urgent concerned the fight against corruption and changes to the welfare system (17% in both cases), followed in order of importance by the defence for human rights, changes to the education system (both 12%) and the judiciary (11%). Asked about the social system in which they would prefer to live, 25% said they favoured Switzerland, 20% Germany and 14% Norway. (ANSAmed).
