(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 5 - An African swine fever case was detected in Rome Thursday, the first outside the hitherto affected area around Genoa and towards Piedmont, emergency commissioner Angelo Ferrari told ANSA.
    "Yes, there is a case, the zone looks like it's the Insugherata Park," he said over the phone.
    "We are carrying out the necessary controls".
    So far the only cases detected have been in an area stretching from the province of Genoa towards Piedmont, up to Serravalle Scrivia near Alessandria.
    African swine fever is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease affecting both domestic and feral swine of all ages. ASF is not a threat to human health and cannot be transmitted from pigs to humans. It is not a food safety issue. ASF is found in countries around the world.
    Farm group CIA said "this Rome find turns the alarm into a national emergency".
    The Lazio regional task force on swine fever met later Thursday.
