Meritocracy shouldn't worsen
inequality, Pope Francis said Monday.
"This problem of inequality can be aggravated by a false
conception of meritocracy that undermines the notion of human
dignity," he said as he received in audience at the Vatican the
participants in the "Minerva Dialogues" meeting promoted by the
Dicastery for Culture and Education.
"The recognition and reward of merit and human effort have a
foundation, but there is a risk of conceiving the economic
advantage of a few as earned or deserved, while the poverty of
many is seen, in a certain sense, as their fault".
