Late ex-pope Benedict XVI has been
cleared of failing to prevent a paedophile priest from
continuing to commit violence against minors when the German
former pontiff was bishop of Munich and Freising in the 1980s,
German media reported Tuesday.
The Munich Public Prosecutor's Office had counted Benedict,
under his birth name of Joseph Ratzinger, among the defendants
in the proceedings on sexual abuse in the Munich archbishopric.
The same public prosecutor's office has now dismissed the case,
according to German media reports, including Dpa.
Among the accused were also Cardinal Friedrich Wetter and the
former vicar general Gerhard Gruber, for both of whom the case
was also dismissed.
Benedict died on December 31 at the age of 93 having become the
first pope since the Middle Ages to resign in February 2013.
