Pope Francis on Thursday renewed calls
for politics to be approached as a form of charity and for world
leaders to protect the environment.
Francis invited the faithful to pray so that "political
responsibility is lived at all levels as a high form of
charity," Vatican Radio said. This should be the main theme of
prayers during July, the pontiff said.
The pope has issued repeated calls on the ethical behaviour
of politicians, at a time of increasing tensions between
governments over issues such as the economy, immigration and
employment.
In the 2013 Evangelii gaudium, his apostolic exhortation, he
said politics was a "lofty vocation" and "one of the highest
forms of charity, inasmuch as it seeks the common good".
On Thursday he also repeated calls to protect the
environment, urging world leaders to "stop ruining the garden
which God has entrusted to us so that all may enjoy it".
