Italy's historic and victorious
women''s Olympic volleyball players have a "great fire" within,
coach Julio Velasco said after they beat reigning champions USA
for their first Olympic gold medal in Paris.
"We still have to realise what we did, we only lost one set, a
record in an Olympics. We always had great 'fire' and lucidity,
the final was the best match," he said.
"I feel pride for this team, for the staff, even the Italian
Olympic Committee (CONI) put us in the ideal conditions, it is a
victory for the whole movement, even the small clubs.
"Women's volleyball is to girls what football is to boys.
"I hope the gold will give a boost, there are not enough gyms
for all the girls who want to play volleyball".
