Lorenzo Musetti won plaudits from
Italian tennis great Nicola Pietrangeli on Monday after the
20-year-old beat world number five Carlos Alcaraz 6-4, 6-7(6),
6-4 to claim his first career ATP title at the Hamburg European
Open on Sunday.
Musetti is part of a generation of exciting young men tennis
players that also includes 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo
Berrettini, world number 10 Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego,
who is ranked 58.
"I called Musetti to pay him my compliments," two-time French
Open-winner Pietrangeli, 88, told ANSA.
"He reminds me of us old players and there are no limits to
where he can get.
"I must have said bravo 10 times.
"He was fantastic. He played like a champion.
"In my opinion he is the Italian (of today's generation) who
plays the best tennis.
"I like him a lot because he is highly technical and plays less
with power, which makes him different to the others and recalls
the players of my time.
Fantastic".
Musetti climbed 31 places to 31st in the world rankings thanks
to his triumph on Sunday.
