Gianmarco Pozzecco is the new coach of
the Italian men's basketball national team after Meo Sacchetti
was unexpectedly dismissed earlier this week, the federation has
announced.
Pozzecco, 49, was enormously popular with fans when he was a
player and was part of the team that won the silver medal at the
2004 Summer Olympics.
He is currently assistant to head coach Ettore Messina at
Olimpia Milano adn is expected to keep that role as well for the
time being.
Former Varese power forward Sacchetti, 68, who had coached the
national side since September 2017, had been expected to stay on
as Italy boss at least until the Euros in September after
leading the team to qualification for last year's Olympics.
