Administering the Italian Tat vaccination in chronically cART-treated HIV/Aids patients can drastically reduce the virus reservoir, according to a paper on an eight-year follow-up study in Italy published in the Frontiers in Immunology journal on Wednesday. The study, conducted by a team featuring Barbara Ensoli, the head of Italian Higher Health Institute's National HIV/AIDS Research Center, showed the virus reservoir was down by 90% after eight years.
The paper concluded that Tat immunization represents a promising pathogenesis-driven intervention to intensify cART efficacy while renewing perspectives for a functional cure.
