The lesson from the French elections
where the far right National Rally (RN) came third behind a
leftwing alliance and President Emmanuel Macron's centrists is
that the Right loses when it runs on its own, and the answer to
that is the centre, as has been shown in Italy, Foreign Minister
and centre-right post Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) leader
Antonio Tajani said Monday.
"The lesson of the French elections must make everyone realise
that the extreme right or the right alone is condemned to lose
because all the other forces are ganging up against it," he said
after tactics that left the strongest anti-RN candidate in place
in most seats.
"The only antidote is to have a strong centre, allied and
alternative to the left," said Tajani, who is also deputy
premier.
