The government has said that the
Italian Navy's Duilio destroyer on Saturday took out a drone
heading towards it in the Red Sea that was launched by
Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Italy is playing a lead role in the new EU Aspides mission to
shield Red Sea shipping from the Houthi attacks that started
after Israel began its war against Hamas in Gaza following the
October 7 massacres.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto blasted the "terrorist attacks"
of the rebels, saying they are a serious violation of
international law.
Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani hailed the
navy, saying it "defends free shipping".
