France need not be ashamed about its
response to migrants and refugees arriving in Europe, sources at
the Elysée Palace said on Saturday.
"France should not be ashamed, it is a country of welcome and
integration," said the sources, after Pope Francis criticised
the "indifference" of European policymakers to the plight of
people seeking protection and a better life in the bloc.
On Saturday the pope addressed the closing session of
Mediterranean Meetings in the southern French port city of
Marseille, rejecting the narrative of a migrant invasion and
saying those who make the perilous sea crossing just want to be
welcomed.
