European Justice Commissioner Didier
Reynders said Tuesday that European Union member countries are
required by EU law to recognise the children of same-sex
couples, a law Italy's rightwing parties are chafing against.
MIlan was recently forced to stop registering the children of
same-sex couples and ruling rightwing parties voted aginst their
recognition in the Senate .
"In line with the Lgbtiq equality strategy for 2020-2025, the
Commission is in continuous dialogue with Member States
regarding the implementation of the judgments of the Court of
Justice of the European Union" and "this also includes the
obligation for Member States to recognise" children "of same-sex
parents, for the purpose of exercising the rights conferred by
the EU", said Reynders, responding to a question on the rights
of 'rainbow' families in Italy from opposition left-leaning 5
Star Movement (M5S) MEPs.
