The Golar Tundra regasification ship
docked in the Tuscan port of Piombino late on Sunday after a
26-day trip from Singapore via the Suez Canal.
Italian energy infrastructure company SNAM has brought in the
ship as part of the effort to wean the country off its reliance
on Russian gas following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
It will make it possible to boost imports of liquefied natural
gas instead of gas coming through pipelines from Russia.
But the arrival of the 300-metres-long, 55-metres-high vessel
has met local resistance led by Piombino Mayor Francesco
Ferrari.
The Golar Tundra, which will not be operative for months, has
the capacity to transform around five billion cubic metres of
gas a year.
Another facility set to be stationed at Ravenna will have the
capacity to transform around 13 billion cubic metes a year.
