Italian 92-year-old Holocaust survivor Sami Modiano said Thursday he would keep talking to the young about his wartime experiences as long as he lives.
Speaking on the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Modiano said "I am a deportation survivor, I was 14 years old when I was sent to Birkenau. I lost everyone from my family, but I actually lost a total of 2000 people, those who were part of the small Jewish community in Rhodes, where I come from. I still represent this community.
"As long as I have strength and life, I will pass on to the children what was done. I have faith and hope in those who will come after us".
Modiano was speaking after a preview visit with Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano and Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri to the exhibition 'Nazi Hell. The death camps of Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka' scheduled to open in Rome from 27 January, Holocaust Remembrance Day, at the Shoah Museum Foundation.
Modiano, who was born on the Greek island when it was in Italian hands, is one of a handful of Italian Holocaust survivors including life Senator Liliana Segre, 95, and writer Edith Bruck, 91.
