Lower House Speaker Roberto Fico
said Friday that he disagrees with Der Spiegel after the German
weekly called Brothers of Italy leader Giorgia Meloni
"Mussolini's heir".
"I don't agree with Der Spiegel's headline because Mussolini has
no heirs in Italy," Fico said during a visit to Berlin.
"We are a republic and a solid, strong democracy".
Meloni is tipped to become Italy's next premier as the FdI was
top of the polls before a survey blackout kicked in ahead of the
September 25 general election and the centre-right coalition it
is part of is forecast to get a landslide victory.
"Elections will take place on September 25 and, whoever the
winner is, it will be within the realm of our democratic
republic," said Fico, a member of the 5-Star Movement (M5S), a
rival to the FdI.
"The citizens will decide who wins in free elections".
