Deputy Premier and Interior
Minister Matteo Salvini's League is set to be the Italian party
with the most MEPs after May's European elections, second-only
at the EU level to Germany's CSU/CDU, according to a projection
based on recent polls.
The League is set to go from the six MEPs it has at the
moment to 27, just two fewer than the CSU/CDU.
The League's government coalition partners, the 5-Star
Movement (M5S), are set to go from 14 MEPs to 22.
The opposition centre-left Democratic Party (PD), on the
other hand, is set to drop to 15 MEPs from 26 at the moment.
Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia will drop from 11
to seven MEPs, according to the projection.
