The majority of Democratic Party
(PD) senior members close to ex-leader and ex-premier Matteo
Renzi are in favor of backing former caretaker leader Maurizio
Martina as the candidate to lead the party at a congress next
year, sources said after a meeting on Tuesday.
A significant minority, however, is reportedly insisting this
wing of the party should present its own candidate.
Lazio Governor Nicola Zingaretti is considered Martina's
main rival for the role.
The deadline to present candidatures expires Wednesday at 6
pm.
