Italian President Sergio
Mattarella said Monday that working to ensure human rights are
respected is a moral duty in a message for the 70th anniversary
of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The head of State said that Italy would continue to work on
the human-rights front "above all in its role as a member of the
United Nations Human Rights Council, as of January 2019.
"We take on a great responsibility with this mandate," he
added.
"The promotion of human rights is not just an ethical and
moral imperative, it is also a necessary instrument to prevent
conflicts, to build stable, inclusive societies and, therefore,
to promote peace, security and development".
